Dance Class Review: Music Theatre Philly Adult Ballet Makes for a Nice Sunday Morning
As a former dancer turned lawyer, I’m always looking for a good adult drop-in dance class to take. While the majority of Music Theatre Philly’s “adult” (13+) dance classes take place during the 9-5 hours, they do offer a Sunday mid-morning ballet class from 11:00 AM to 12:15 PM; the perfect time to get a good workout in while still being able to make Sunday brunch or be able to catch the 1:00 PM football games during the season.
I arrived at the studio at 10:45 to give me some time to stretch and was greeted by the instructor, Nicole, who was very friendly and welcoming. She informed me that the class would take place in the downstairs studio and allowed me to head down there to warm-up. It was a very quiet morning and it did appear that I would be the only person taking the class, which was pretty nerve wracking since I hadn’t taken a proper ballet class in about 5 years, but then I was joined by Mindy, one of the founders and Co-Artistic Directors.
The class began right on time. Before we began, Nicole asked me some questions about my experience with ballet and my level of knowledge/competence to make sure that the class would be beneficial to someone at my particular level. She then began with instruction at the barre. We did several different combinations at the barre to warm up our bodies and to work on technique. Nicole paid close attention to the two of us as we did each combination and offered helpful corrections without being harsh or condescending, as has been my experience at a few other studios in the area where I have attended classes. We then went to the floor for adagio and jumps, as well as some turns and leaps across the floor, before ending the class promptly at 12:15.
Overall, the class was a very pleasant experience. I left feeling refreshed, tired (in a good way), and happy to have gotten a chance to do some classic ballet work for the first time in a long while. Nicole is clearly knowledgeable about ballet technique and is a very helpful and kind instructor. The studio is in a convenient location, just a block away from the Walnut-Locust subway stop, in Center City. I would recommend this class to anyone looking for a refresher course in ballet technique in a stress-free environment, and, in fact, I look forward to taking this class again on the Sundays that I’m available.
Music Theatre Philly also provides Private Instruction and Coaching, Headshots, Parties, and Studio Rentals on top of their Kids, Adult, and Master Classes. For a full list of current courses and offerings visit www.musictheatrephilly.com.
