Crave Creamery- Springfield, PA
Crave Creamery in Springfield is located in the Old Sproul Shopping Village on Baltimore Pike. They feature homemade ice cream and Gelato. I actually ran into this little Ice cream shop by accident when we went out with friends one night. I decided it was time to head back with the family and give it a review.
Right when you walk up to the front door you see the cool ice cream spoon door handles… nice detail. Walking in the first impression is that this is a clean and well maintained place of business. The cleanliness of a retail establishment like this is extremely important to me and even when looking behind the counters, it was immaculate. Right in your face is the Gelato display and it’s awesome. Adorning the walls are chalkboard menus and various cow pictures and decor.
I really like the ambiance here. The employees are attentive and friendly. Pretty much all of the guests in my party rushed for the Gelato display. It just looks amazing and the presentation is awesome. Like tiramisu? They have it with the sponge cake hanging right out there. In to Coconut? There is a split coconut right there on top of the Gelato. You like cheesecake right! There are large bits right in the Gelato. Again it’s the attention to detail.
The ice cream counter doesn’t disappoint either with flavors such as : Fresh Peach, Moose Tracks, cookies and cream, Elvis (Banana &a Peanut Butter I presume) and Chocolate to name a few.
So what is the difference between ice cream and Gelato? Well they have a great little sign with the comparison. Basically Gelato uses whole milk instead of the cream used in iced cream. It’s less fat and they also use less air in Gelato making a very sort of concentrated and rich product. Gelato is also served colder than once cream (-13 degrees Celsius according to the sign). It’s super smooth and also comes in dairy free sorbet.
I personally went for my standard Mint Chocolate Chip and added another scoop of Stracciatela which is Italian chocolate chip. I had this in a simple cup but they also offer various cones and also items like floats and milkshakes.
The pricing was reasonable for the quality you get. Just to keep with the cow theme, their sizes are calf, cow and bull. Here is a shot of their pricing boards:
At the end of the day, I don’t eat a ton of dessert. Normally when I do it’s with the family while we are out on some sort of journey (In this case a hike). This is one of those places I would probably go out of my way to visit if I was in Springfield. It’s clean, friendly and the Gelato is just awesome which is why this has such higher ratings on Google & Yelp. I tend to agree.
They have a sign posted that I thought I would share in case you are a fan of Crave Creamery. Follow their Instagram @crave.creamery and use the hashtag #cravecreamery to be featured in their page. Not sure which page they mean but I am assuming Facebook? They don’t have a website that I could find.
